Comparison of Reliability of Thin-Walled Pressure Vessel with Different Materials Subjected to Torque using FOSM and Simulation Methods
In the design of thin-walled pressure vessels, aluminium alloys and stainless-steel alloys are used. In this paper, thin-walled pressure vessels, when subjected to torque, are considered for the analysis. Material properties, like strength, diameter and thickness, are considered as random variables. Internal pressure and applied torque are also taken as random variables. Reliability analysis has been made by assuming the random variables follow a normal distribution. In this analysis, FOSM (First - Order Second Moment Method) and MCS (Monte Carlo Simulation) methods are adopted. Four materials, 5052 and 6061 aluminium alloy and 304 and 316 stainless-steel alloy materials are considered. It is observed that the 316 stainless-steel alloy can hold pressure and torque with high reliability.
